Celebrating 120 Years of Gorringe Park Primary School

In 2027, Gorringe Park Primary School proudly celebrates an incredible milestone—120 years at the heart of our community. Since opening our doors in 1907, we have been a place of learning, growth, and belonging for generations of children and families.

Over the past 120 years, our school has grown and changed alongside the local community. What began as a small, traditional school in the early 20th century has evolved into a vibrant, modern learning environment where children are encouraged to be curious, confident, and compassionate. While many things have changed, our core purpose remains the same: to provide a safe, supportive space where every child can thrive.

A Look Back in Time

When our school first opened, life for pupils was very different from today. Classrooms would have looked much simpler—rows of wooden desks, chalkboards instead of digital screens, and desks with inkwells for handwriting practice. Lessons were often more formal, with a strong focus on reading, writing, and arithmetic, and children were expected to sit quietly and listen carefully to their teacher.

School days were structured and disciplined. Pupils often wore simple uniforms or their best everyday clothes, and class sizes were usually larger than we see today. Technology as we know it did not exist—no computers, tablets, or interactive whiteboards—so learning relied heavily on books, repetition, and the teacher’s instruction.

Playtimes would have been just as important then as they are now, though the games might have been different—skipping ropes, marbles, and hopscotch were favourites. Many children would also have had responsibilities at home or even jobs outside school, making education a precious and valued opportunity.

As we celebrate 120 years, we reflect with pride on our history while looking ahead to the future. Today, Gorringe Park Primary School is a diverse and inclusive community where children benefit from a broad, engaging curriculum enriched by technology, creativity, and opportunity.
